Benjamin Doherty is a community
activist who has helped non-profit organizations develop and
enhance technological programs to benefit human services. ?
From November 1998-April 1999 Ben worked as a Production Assistant
for StreetWise Newspaper. Previously he worked as a library
assistant for the University of Chicago library, supervising
student employees and training them in various library processes,
such as circulation of materials and technical services. In
this capacity Ben assisted Masters and Ph.D. level social work
students with research, and resolved disputes between patrons
and the Library. He presently is a volunteer and freelance IT
consultant for Latinos Progresando, a non-profit immigration
case management firm. Ben has worked for them as freelance contractors,
as well as a reliable volunteer in the same capacity. As a desktop
publishing instructor for the youth, he brings the experience
of having designed and assisted in the production of corporate
identities, books, pamphlets, posters, postcards, letterheads,
and broadsheets. Ben demonstrates professionalism and dedication
in his work, motivating youth by his example. His organizational
skills include assessing existing technological resources and
needs, technological training and problem solving for groups
or individuals. Ben works with patience, tolerance and clear,
effective, and audience-appropriate communication, supervision
and performance evaluation, consensus building, conflict resolution,
and an understanding for mediating group dynamics. In regards
to assisting youth in developing their skills for international
relations, he writes and edits for clarity, brevity, and efficacy,
and is literate in French and German. Ben’s knowledge
of information technology includes data modeling with particular
attention to data model normalization and data integrity, fluency
in WebObjects frameworks and Postgresql and MySQL databases,
fluency in XHTML and CSS, expertise in eZ Publish content management
system, familiarity with application interoperability, SOAP,
XML-RPC, familiarity with free software and open-source development,
administration of FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows 98-XP
on the server, desktop, and laptop, programming in Java, PHP,
and object-oriented BASICs such as RealBasic and Visual Basic.
